The Big Names England Left at Home for the 2026 World Cup
Thomas Tuchel’s first World Cup squad is out, and it’s ruthless. The 2026 tournament kicks off June 11, and England’s 26-man list has some high-profile casualties. Tuchel warned he wouldn’t take “all the No 10s” and he meant it. Here are the biggest names not on the plane to the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Phil Foden – The Casualty of the No. 10 Logjam
Foden was England’s standout at Euro 2024 and a Premier League Player of the Season just two years ago. But Tuchel’s midfield reshuffle has cost him.
Tuchel said he “can’t take all the No 10s”. With Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White all competing for the same spots, Foden got squeezed. Injury niggles and inconsistent form at Man City this spring didn’t help.
Tuchel’s blunt: “Harry Kane, Bellingham and Foden cannot and will not play together in the same England team while I’m in charge”. That’s a statement.
Jack Grealish – Form Isn’t Enough
Grealish had a resurgence on loan at Everton: 1 goal, 4 assists in 7 games. Fans have been calling for him all season. Still not enough.
The left flank is stacked. Marcus Rashford is “flying”, Eze and Anthony Gordon are in form, and Tuchel values tactical discipline over dribbling flair right now. Grealish himself admitted, “Rashy’s flying, Eze, Anthony Gordon, you know, everyone’s doing so well… I can’t really complain”. This is his second tournament in a row he’s missed.
Trent Alexander-Arnold– The Surprise Snub
Real Madrid’s right-back has 83 caps and is arguably England’s best passer from deep. He didn’t make the 35-man squad for the June camp, and Tuchel’s stuck with Reece James, Tino Livramento and Djed Spence instead.
Tuchel wants a “tighter, more competitive squad” and values defensive solidity over creative full-backs right now. Steven Gerrard called it “surprising and disappointing”. At 27, Trent’s World Cup future is now in doubt.
Kyle Walker– The End of an Era
Walker’s England career looks over at 35, four caps short of 100. He was Southgate’s go-to for pace and reliability, but Tuchel’s moved on. Lost a yard of pace and looked exposed vs Senegal last summer. Tuchel didn’t even reach out about the omission. Reece James and Livramento are now ahead of him.
Ollie Watkins – The No. 9 Squeeze
Watkins has 6 goals in 20 England appearances and was Kane’s backup at Euro 2024. But he’s been out of form for Villa and left out of the latest squad.
Tuchel can’t afford out-of-touch players, and with Kane locked in, minutes for a backup striker are limited. Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke and Ivan Toney all missed out.
Harry Maguire & Luke Shaw-Out of Favor
Two of Southgate’s stalwarts are now “left at home”. Maguire’s experience was debated by writers, but Tuchel went with Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and John Stones instead.Fitness and form. Shaw’s injury record remains an issue, and Maguire hasn’t convinced Tuchel he fits the system.
Cole Palmer & Morgan Gibbs-White,The Young Guns are also out.Palmer was outstanding at Euro 2024 and the Club World Cup, but injuries and competition at No. 10 kept him out. Gibbs-White scored 14 league goals this seasonbut missed the cut.
Tuchel’s message is clear: reputation doesn’t matter. He’s prioritizing balance, work rate, and players who fit his system. He’s left out multiple players with 50+ caps and picked in-form Premier League performers like Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Nico O’Reilly instead.
England look younger, more balanced, and less reliant on “big names”. It’s a gamble. If Bellingham, Saka and Kane fire, nobody will care about Foden or Grealish. If they don’t, Tuchel will face questions.
The final squad is announced May 22. For now, these names are the ones watching from home.
