Nick Woltemade Exit Looming - Newcastle Cut Losses After 1 Year
Nick Woltemade’s Newcastle United career looks set to end before it really began. After a “difficult first season at St James’ Park”, the German striker is expected to leave this summer, with Newcastle now “open to offers” around €65M.
A Move That Never Clicked
Woltemade arrived at Newcastle with huge hype - 6’6” frame, technical for his size, and fresh off scoring goals in the Bundesliga. The idea was simple: a physical, modern #9 to rotate/compete with Isak and Wilson.
Reality was different. Injuries, adaptation issues, and the sheer quality of Isak in front of him meant minutes were scarce. When he did play, he looked like a player still adjusting to Premier League intensity. 1 goal in limited appearances told the story. For a €65M+ striker, that’s not enough.
Eddie Howe is ruthless with profiles that don’t fit. Woltemade’s hold-up play is good, but Newcastle’s system demands pace + pressing from the front. Isak does that better. So Woltemade became the odd man out.
Why Newcastle Want €65M Now
This is Newcastle being smart with PSR. They bought Woltemade for ~€70M+ last summer. Selling at €65M after 1 year is basically a “break-even” exit. That protects them from FFP losses while freeing up wages + squad space.
They’d “prefer a permanent transfer” because a loan + option to buy doesn’t help their PSR calculation this year. With Tonali staying and other big targets needed, Newcastle need clean sales. Woltemade is the most obvious one.

The Suitors: Dortmund, Atletico, Villa
Three very different clubs, one common idea: Woltemade needs a reset.
Borussia Dortmund ,Makes perfect sense. German club, German striker, plays on the front foot. With Haller’s fitness issues and Fullkrug aging, Dortmund need a young, physical #9. Bundesliga pace suits Woltemade better than the PL. Dortmund love “rehab projects” - see Adeyemi.
Atletico Madrid ,Simeone adores big, hardworking strikers. Morata is gone, Griezmann is 34. Woltemade fits the “Athletico 9” mold: strong, can play with back to goal, works for the team. La Liga’s slower tempo would help him too.
Aston Villa , Unai Emery wants depth behind Watkins. Villa are in Champions League now and need a different profile - someone who can change games late with physicality. Woltemade + Watkins could be a nasty 2nd-half combo.
Clubs prefer “loan with option to buy” because Woltemade is high-risk after 1 bad year. Newcastle want cash now. Expect a compromise: loan with obligation to buy if he hits appearances/goals targets.
For Woltemade, this is a career-defining move. At 23, he can’t afford another year on the bench. Back to Germany or Spain might unlock the player everyone thought Newcastle were buying.
Newcastle admit defeat quickly. €65M recouped, squad streamlined. For Woltemade, it’s a chance to prove St James’ Park was the wrong fit, not the wrong player.
