The FIFA World Cup has produced countless unforgettable moments, but one match is remembered for all the wrong reasons. On 25 June 1982, West Germany faced Austria in the final group game of the World Cup in Spain. Before kick-off, both teams knew that a West German victory by one or two goals would send both nations through to the next round while eliminating Algeria, who had already completed all of their group matches. Just 10 minutes into the game, Horst Hrubesch scored to give West Germany a 1-0 lead. What followed shocked the football world. With the scoreline now favouring both teams, players from West Germany and Austria effectively stopped attacking. The remainder of the match was filled with harmless passes, little urgency and almost no genuine attempts to score. Spectators inside the stadium whistled and waved banknotes in protest, while commentators across the world openly criticised what they were witnessing.

The match became known as the “Disgrace of Gijón” or the “Anschluss Match” and remains one of the most controversial games in football history. The scandal had a lasting impact on the World Cup. FIFA responded by introducing a major rule change: from the 1986 tournament onwards, all final group-stage matches would be played simultaneously to prevent teams from manipulating results based on earlier outcomes. While World Cups have seen shocking upsets, controversial refereeing decisions and violent incidents, many still consider the events in Gijón to be the darkest sporting moment in the competition’s history because it undermined the spirit of fair competition itself.
