The United States and FIFA are facing severe criticism just days before the 2026 World Cup begins due to strict security checks and immigration issues. While the tournament is meant to be a joyful global event, the arrival of several international teams and officials has been overshadowed by intense airport screenings and visa rejections. This treatment has caused widespread anger across the football community, with critics accusing organizers of treating participants unfairly and damaging the welcoming spirit of the competition. The controversy intensified after video footage circulated on social media showing members of the Senegal national team undergoing tight inspections directly on the airport tarmac. The footage showed players standing outside near their luggage shortly after landing, while security personnel conducted hand-held body screenings. Along with Senegal, the national teams of Uzbekistan, Iran, and Iraq have also been subjected to rigorous border checks that left players and staff members feeling humiliated during their arrival. These strict border measures have already caused major disruptions for team staff and match officials. Iraq's national team photographer, Talal Salah, was reportedly held for more than ten hours and had his phone inspected before being officially denied entry into the United States and sent back home. Even top match officials are being turned away from the tournament. Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was named the 2025 African referee of the year, was barred from entering the country at Miami International Airport. FIFA confirmed that Artan will be unable to officiate at the World Cup, noting that the host government ultimately determines who is admitted into the country. Meanwhile, Switzerland forward Breel Embolo is also facing visa complications that could force him to miss the competition entirely.

This situation matters immensely because it completely contradicts previous assurances made by football leaders. Last summer, FIFA President Gianni Infantino publicly stated that no one would be barred from the World Cup, emphasizing that the tournament was meant to be a special occasion to unite everyone. Instead, the current immigration difficulties are creating massive barriers for players, staff, and international supporters. A large number of football fans, particularly from Africa, have had their visa applications rejected by authorities.
