Bernard Parker Chasing Nedbank Cup History as TS Galaxy Interim Coach

Bernard Parker has the chance to make Nedbank Cup history next Saturday when he leads TS Galaxy into the 2026 final against Durban City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana striker was recently placed in caretaker charge of the team after the club suddenly parted ways with Adnan Beganovic on Thursday. Even though Beganovic successfully guided the squad to the deciding match, Parker is now set to take the reins. Unless the club makes a swift permanent appointment before the game, Parker will lead the team and attempt to become the very first person to win the Nedbank Cup as both a player and a head coach since the tournament took its current form in 2008.

Parker already holds a special place in the history of this competition from his sixteen-year professional playing career. He famously scored the winning goal for Kaizer Chiefs in the 2013 final against SuperSport United during extra time. That memorable strike came from twenty-five yards out, as he drove toward the penalty area and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Over his playing days, which concluded when he retired at TS Galaxy at the end of the 2023/24 season, he made twenty-eight appearances in the cup and scored three goals. However, he also knows the pain of losing on the biggest stage. Ironically, in 2019, he played for Chiefs when they were stunned 1-0 in the final by a second-tier TS Galaxy team, meaning he has already tasted both victory and defeat in this exact scenario.

Now hoping to experience that final magic from the sidelines, Parker is confident his team can lift the trophy this season. Speaking last month, he expressed a strong desire to earn a winner's medal as a coach and stated his firm belief that his squad can repeat the club's 2019 success. He noted that center-back Macbeth Mahlangu is the only remaining player from that historic team, meaning the rest of the current group is hungry to taste their first success with the club. Parker plans to use his deep playing experience to guide the newer players, emphasizing the importance of managing pressure and relying on senior players to take control of the game when it matters most.
