England Roar Back: Three Lions Show Character to Beat Croatia 4-2 in World Cup Opener
Thomas Tuchel’s England didn’t just win their World Cup opener — they answered every doubt. After 45 minutes of déjà vu and two surrendered leads, the Three Lions showed up in the second half with the mentality of champions, smashing Croatia 4-2 in a Group L thriller at AT&T Stadium.
For a team haunted by “nearly” moments, this felt different. Big names stood up. Ghosts were buried. Three points secured.
First Half Chaos: England’s Old Wounds Reopened
This had the makings of another England worry-fest. Harry Kane put England ahead in the 12th minute with a retaken penalty after Noni Madueke was chopped down by Luka Modric. Kane made no mistake second time.
But Croatia hit back. Martin Baturina blasted past Jordan Pickford for 1-1. Then just before halftime, England were caught square again. Mario Pasalic’s ball over the top, Ivan Perisic nodded it down, and Petar Musa finished with a controlled volley. 2-2 at the break.
Tuchel was fuming. At halftime assistant Anthony Barry “slaughtered the players” on ITV, admitting England weren’t playing freely and were going long when they should keep it simple.
Second Half Statement: Big Names, Bigger Response
Whatever Tuchel said in the dressing room worked. England came out with cojones.
Jude Bellingham - The Engine.Just 80 seconds into the second half, Bellingham raced onto Elliot Anderson’s pass, shrugged off Mario Pasalic, and scuffed his shot in off the post for 3-2. That was the moment the game tilted. At 20, he’s no longer England’s “future” — he’s the present. Determination, drive, and ice in his veins.

Harry Kane - The Captain, The undisputed English striker.Kane finished with a brace. First the penalty composure, then a textbook header in the 42nd minute from a Declan Rice delivery. That was his 10th World Cup goal and 69th goal of the season for club and country. When England needed calm, he delivered twice.
Declan Rice - The Creator.Rice set-pieces changed the game. His corner found Kane for the header. He controlled midfield transitions and broke up Croatia counters. Tuchel built this side around Kane, but Rice is the spine.
Marcus Rashford - The Finisher.Substitute Rashford sealed it in the 85th minute. After Croatia hung around, he buried them. Impact off the bench, pace, and ruthlessness.
The Stats That Showed England Showed Up is a scoreline of a 4-2 win, but second half was “one-sided”,they dominated set pieces and territory,England 22 total shots, 11 on target vs Croatia 10 total, 5 on target. Pure control after the break,They surrendered two leads, but didn’t collapse. That’s the big change from 2018/2022 showing the charatee of the revived English squad.
Tuchel’s First Impression was that this wasn’t perfect England. Defending for Baturina’s goal was “poor” and Pickford “could have done better”. But this was resilient England. The team stopped being generous after halftime and the game tilted for good.
Kane’s brace, Bellingham’s burst, Rice’s control, Rashford’s finish. When the pressure hit, the big names stepped up.Three points. Top of Group L. And most importantly, belief.
