Kompany’s Trophy Blunder: Bayern Boss Left Bundesliga Silverware in the Kitchen, Wife Stages Rescue Mission
Vincent Kompany’s first Bundesliga title celebration as Bayern Munich manager came with an unexpected plot twist: the coach left the trophy at home, and it took a last-minute rescue from his wife to save the day.
After Bayern clinched the title with a 16-point gap over Dortmund, Kompany took the Meisterschale home following the club’s private celebrations on Saturday night. The plan was simple: bring it to Marienplatz for the official reception.
He forgot.
“We were here and suddenly the trophy was missing!” Kompany told _Bild_. “Then I remembered: ‘Oh, it was at our house’. It was lying in the kitchen. I didn’t even remember anymore that someone had given it to me the night before and said: ‘Vinnie, you bring it tomorrow.’”
The realisation hit as the squad was heading to Munich’s Marienplatz to be honoured by Lord Mayor Dominik Krause. The most important piece of German football silverware was still sitting next to the toaster.
Enter Carla Higgs. Kompany’s wife jumped into action, grabbed the trophy, and drove it into the city centre.
It wasn’t smooth sailing. She couldn’t get into the town hall where the ceremony was underway, so four police officers and a security guard escorted the trophy through a back entrance. The Meisterschale arrived in the Great Hall just as Bayern president Herbert Hainer was delivering his speech.“Little did anyone know, he had his wife to thank for delivering the trophy”.
Once the trophy was safely back with the squad, Bayern took to the Town Hall balcony and presented it to thousands of fans below as planned. Kompany laughed off the mishap, calling it a “kitchen nightmare”. For a manager who’s already won over critics with two league titles and a near Champions League final, it’s now part of Bayern folklore.
As Kompany put it, “It was lying in the kitchen or something”.
Not exactly how you expect a Bundesliga trophy to spend its first night as champion, but in Munich, even the Meisterschale needs a reminder to take the trash out.
