What’s Happening with Victor Boniface: From Bundesliga Breakout to Injury Rehab and Loan Limbo
A year ago, Victor Boniface was the breakout Nigerian striker in Europe. 21 goals, 9 assists, Bundesliga invincible champion, DFB-Pokal winner. Saudi clubs were offering €70M. Fast forward to May 2026: he’s on loan at Werder Bremen, coming off knee surgery, and fighting just to make the matchday squad.
Here’s why the 24-year-old’s career hit pause — and how Bayer Leverkusen plan to get him back. Boniface arrived from Union Saint-Gilloise in summer 2023 and exploded, scoring 21 goals and providing 9 assists in 34 games. He was key in the championship season… unbelievable in his performance ,leading Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga and aPokal double. By December 2023, he was Africa’s hottest striker prospect. His second season was wrecked. Adductor tears, muscle problems, then knee issues. Still managed 11 goals, 1 assist in 27 games. Saudi Saga — January 2025,Al-Nassr bidded up to €70M/$73.5M. Boniface was left out of training and a matchday squad while talks happened. The deal collapsed when Al-Nassr signed Jhon Duran instead. The Loan Decision: Why Leverkusen Sent Him to Werder Bremen After pre-season 2025, Leverkusen felt Boniface wasn’t fully fit. With games every 3 days, “you’re not training anymore with a team”. He needed rhythm, So a Season-long loan to Werder Bremen last summer was their plan. The plan was “more training to get in his best shape again”, consistent minutes, less congestion. Sporting director Rolfes said "We decided together that it was best for him to go on loan to get back to that level”. It backfired. At Bremen, Boniface’s knee “turned out there is still some problems”. He underwent surgery in January 2026. in the start of April he was back in individual training and later made Bremen’s bench vs Stuttgart but didn’t play. For Leverkusen they still rate him and he still has a contract till 2028,“Sporting-wise, we have no doubt about his quality”. The loan was protection, not punishment. He’s expected back for 2026/27 pre-season.Super Eagles fans are worried. Boniface was seen as Victor Osimhen’s heir. He missed AFCON 2025 and risks missing June World Cup qualifiers if fitness doesn’t return. For Boniface At 24, this is a critical reset. He went from €70M Saudi target to fighting for Bremen bench minutes in 4 months. But he’s had this before — at Bodo/Glimt, injury nearly ended him. He came back stronger. Victor Boniface was last season’s sensation. This season became a cautionary tale about injuries, fixture congestion, and how fast football moves.Leverkusen loaned him out to save him. Knee surgery slowed him more. Now he’s in the hardest phase: healthy, but not trusted yet. As he said before surgery: “Scoring goals and providing assists are important, but what matters most to me is playing my style of football and having fun”.At 24, with 21 Bundesliga goals already on his CV, the fun isn’t over. But the next 3 months decide if Boniface 2.0 becomes reality — or if “what could have been” starts getting louder.
