York City Claim National League Title in Chaotic Finale Against Rochdale

York City has secured their return to the English Football League after a ten-year absence following a highly dramatic 1-1 draw against title rivals Rochdale. The match on the final day of the season decided which team would win the National League and earn automatic promotion to League Two. York finished as champions with 108 points, while Rochdale ended just two points behind with 106. Because the league rules only allow one team to go up automatically, Rochdale must now compete in the playoffs for the single remaining promotion spot.

The game reached an incredibly tense conclusion deep into stoppage time. Rochdale entered the match knowing they needed a victory to overtake York for the title. They appeared to have achieved this when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe scored a header in the 95th minute to give them the lead. This late goal sparked a pitch invasion by the home supporters, which temporarily delayed the match. However, York refused to accept defeat. When play finally resumed, they sent ten players forward in a desperate push for an equalizer. Their effort paid off in the 103rd minute, with the final kick of the season. Josh Stones managed to force the ball over the line during a scramble in front of the net. Referee Will Finnie used goal-line technology to confirm the goal, which led to a second pitch invasion, this time by delighted York fans chanting about their promotion.

York City manager Stuart Maynard praised the fighting spirit of his team, referring to his players as warriors. He revealed that immediately after Rochdale scored, his players came to the bench with a strong belief that they still had one last chance. Maynard noted that this late-game determination has been a recurring theme all season, earning the affectionate nickname "York-time" among the fans and showing the group's real togetherness.

While the match was a massive celebration for York, it also highlighted a major frustration with the league's current promotion rules. The day before the game, both York and Rochdale released a joint statement calling for a rule change. They argued it is unfair that a team can earn over 100 points during a season and not be guaranteed promotion. This shared frustration is tied to recent events. Last season, York finished as runners-up but failed to win the playoffs, watching Oldham Athletic win promotion instead despite finishing 23 points behind them. To address this imbalance, 72 clubs across the National League system launched the 3UP campaign in February 2025. This campaign demands that the English Football League open up a third promotion spot, a necessary change that Maynard fully supports as he hopes Rochdale can still join his team in League Two next year.
